ICAR – CIRCOT Library Resources

Founded in 1924, CIRCOT has completed 98 years of service to cotton sector of the nation through its wide ranging research activities and technological support to cotton breeders and textile industry by conducting qualitative evaluation of cotton varieties, yarn and fabric testing, ginning, spinning, value-added utilization of agro-waste and technology consultancy.

The institute is affiliated to University of Mumbai since 1958 as its post graduate centre for M.Sc. (by research) subjects: Physics, Bio-physics, Microbiology, Physical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry and Ph.D (Science) in Physics and Microbiology.

Apart from research and education, this institute is a one of its kind skill development centre in cotton sector of India. The institute conducts training programs especially designed to suit the needs of human resources in cotton sector and textiles industries. ICAR-CIRCOT is ISO 9001:2015 QMS compliant by BIS and have NABL accreditation ISO/IEC 17025:2017 certified Labs for testing cotton textiles.

The institute library forms a hub of all above activities going on in the institute. Scientists and Technical Personnel, Research Associates working on different projects, students doing post-graduation under the guidance of scientists are the prime readers of the Library. They rely on library for their scientific and technical references.

This Library is OPEN for reference study for outsiders as well. The faculty members, students, consultants, scholars doing R&D in Natural fibres, Textile finishing, Composite technology and Nano applications in any ways. The outside visitors are requested to bring an introductory letter from the competent authority of their Institution/Company to avail the Library facility.

The Library is open on all working days between 10 am to 5 pm.

CIRCOT Library Resources

CIRCOT library holds scientific and technical books abreast on subjects viz. qualitative evaluation of fibres, yarn and fabric testing, physics, statistics, organic chemistry, applied microbiology, high end instrumentation, cellulose and polymers, dyes & dyeing, spinning & weaving, pulp & paper science, wood science, advanced textile finishing, technical textiles, non-wovens & composites, nanotechnology along with scientific dictionaries, encyclopedias etc. Library also possesses good collection of HINDI books incl. hindi vishwakosh (25 vols.), English-Hindi dictionaries, administrative rules books, constitution of India, IPR, RTI, science & technology, ayurveda & yoga, environment, biographies of eminent personalities, novels, kavita evam ekanki etc. The Library possesses good collection of 30 Hindi films CDs / DVDs on environment and other social issues published by TERI, New Delhi.

CIRCOT library holds some core refereed journals of the textile science dated back to 1910. The Library Bound volumes of journals has reached up to 8133 as on March 31, 2021.

Journal Archives include complete runs of journals. It gives easy web access to millions of articles via a simple user interface and article viewer. ICAR-CIRCOT being a part of National Agricultural Research and Education System (NARES) Libraries is availing access to the following Journal E-resources such as;

  • Consortium for e-Resources in Agriculture (CeRA) – Consortium for e-Resources in Agriculture (popularly known as CeRA) is an e-Consortium of Agricultural Libraries under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research for National Agricultural Research and Education System (NARES) Libraries. Established in November 2007, the Consortium for e-Resources in Agriculture (CeRA) is the first of its kind for facilitating 24×7 online accesses of select journals in agricultural and allied sciences to all researchers, teachers and students, policy planners, administrators and extension specialists in NARS through IP authentication. The 152 Consortium members consist of ICAR institutes/ NRCs/ Directorate/ Project Directorates/National Bureau etc. and State Agricultural Universities. CIRCOT is a world renowned NABL accredited (ISO/IEC 17025:2017) referral cotton testing laboratory in India and abroad for testing cotton textiles. The library has developed a good collection of textile testing standards over the years as follows;

  • BIS –TXD standards (with bi-monthly updates) – The Standardization in the field of textiles covering natural and man-made fibres and their products, dyestuffs, textile specialty chemicals, textile machinery, technical textiles and textile protective clothing from Bureau of Indian Standards, New Delhi. (Standalone version access available in the library up to 03 August, 2022)
  • TAPPI Standards – The Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry’s Test Methods Standards are testing procedures and related practices used in the measurement, evaluation, and description of pulp, paper, and related products. TAPPI Technical Information Papers (TIPs) are documents containing specialized information (e.g., data, software, calculations) used in the manufacture, evaluation and description of pulp, paper, and related products, written in a standardized format readily useable by the industry.   • AATCC Test Methods –American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists evaluation procedures focus on biological properties, colorfastness, dyeing properties, identification and analysis, and physical properties. The Association is internationally recognized for its standard methods of testing dyed and chemically treated fibers and fabrics to measure and evaluate such performance characteristics as colorfastness to light and washing, durable press, soil release, shrinkage, water resistance and the many other conditions to which textiles may be subjected.(Year 2018 print version available in the library)
  • ASTM Standards – American Society for Testing and Materials Volumes
    • Textiles 07.01 & 07.02 : These standards covers over 335 textile-related standards covering the characteristics, properties, nomenclature, and uses of textiles. These tests, practices, and specifications cover: • Apparel and fabric • Care labeling • Chemical conditioning and performance • Cotton, yarn, fibers, wool, and felt • Flammability and flame-resistance • Glass fiber • Home furnishings • Inflatable restraints • Non-woven fabric • Pile floor coverings • Subassemblies, such as zippers, hooks, and loops • Tire cord and fabrics. Volume 07.02 also contains standard body measurement charts used for the sizing of apparel for men, women, children, and infants; standard guidelines for care labeling of apparel and other textile products; standards for UV protective fabrics and clothing; and a practice for stitches and seams, which has replaced the Federal standard for apparel end item stitch and seam structures used worldwide by government and industry textile organizations.     • Occupational Health and Safety; Protective Clothing 11.03 : These standards covers standard practices and guides look at the health and safety aspects of various working environments. Standards also cover hazard communications and the safe handling of metal working fluids. Protective Clothing—standards evaluate the performance of biological, chemical, physical, flame-resistant, and thermal protective clothing.(Year 2014 print version available in the library)
    • Space Simulation; Aerospace and Aircraft; Composite Materials 15.03 : These standards covers Space Simulation —specifications and practices cover contamination of cleanrooms and controlled environments, space simulation, and thermal protection. Aerospace and Aircraft —standards deal with cleaning materials, flammability, contamination, hydrogen embrittlement, transparent enclosures, and materials. Composite Materials—test methods assess properties of high modulus fibers, interlaminar properties, laminates, sandwich construction, and structural test methods. Apart from above, we have 324 various Indian and international standards purchased for qualitative evaluation and chemical processing of textiles (selective 120 ISO stds. on CDROM), wood based panels/ fibre boards (selective ISO/TC Stds on CDROM), paper boards and pulp (ISO handbook), protective clothing, antimicrobial activity, particle size determination, Nanotechnology (selective ASTM/ ISO/TC Stds in print and CDROM).   • Analytical Abstracts – Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) product is the premier specialist database and essential web resource for researchers interested in analytical and bio-analytical science. It includes bibliographic Abstracts from over 100 publications in the fields of Clinical Medicine: Toxicology, Life & Biomedical Sciences: Biochemistry & Biophysics; Cell Biology; Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Physics. (Analytical Abstracts 1980 to November 2010 – CDROM is available in library)
  • World Textile Abstracts – Elsevier product contains Textile Resource with Data from 1970 to 2009 available in bibliographic format. It provides coverage of more than 200 international journals and provides archival coverage of several hundred additional journal titles, books and reports. More than 370,000 records are available from 1970 onwards with an additional 12,500+ new citations and abstracts added annually till year 2009.   • INDIA PATENTS: An easily searchable bibliographic database prepared by Patents Infos, Chennai containing more than 60,000 Indian Patents covering the period from 1971 to 2012 with powerful search software for search and retrieval are maintained on a CDROM. (INDIA PATENTS 1971 to 2012 – CDROM is available in library)
  • ICAC documents on CDROM – The Library has procured CDROM in the year 2012 from International Cotton Advisory Committee, USA. It includes all issues of:-Cotton: Review of the World Situation in English, Cotton This Month, Cotton this week, THE ICAC RECORDER (March 1989 to 2012), all statistics appearing in COTTON: WORLD STATISTICS (1924 to 2012), WORLD TEXTILE DEMAND (1970 to 2012), WORLD COTTON TRADE (1970 to 2012), the Proceedings, the country Statements and the Technical Seminars from the plenary meetings (from 1989 to year 2012). It features two studies: Survey of the Cost of Production of Raw Cotton and Survey of Cotton Production Practices, and many more ICAC publications / reports.

Along with World Cotton Statistics (2000-2020) includes a large workable Excel spread sheet. ICAC Cotton Databook (1995-2019) over the past 30 years, the technical information section of the ICAC has been publishing three major triennial reports: ‘Cotton Production Practices’, ‘Cost of Production of Raw Cotton’, and ‘Structure of Cotton Research, Input Supply & Transfer of Technology’. For the first time, those three publications have been compiled into a massive new cotton industry resource, ‘The 2020 Cotton Data Book.’ The 224-page digital book provides detailed data on the cotton industries of the top 38 countries and features more than 40 charts, tables and graphs to help illustrate the information. World Cotton Trade (2007-2020) Gives trade developments in raw cotton since 1980, Analysis of world trade by region, Import/export projections for approximately 50 countries, Matrices of trade flows, Seasonal estimates of export commitments to date etc. (The all 3 data is stored on CDROM is available in library)
