Chemical & Biochemical Processing Division (CBPD)

Chemical and Bio Chemical Processing Division (CBPD) of ICAR- CIRCOT carry out basic, applied and strategic research in the following major areas

  • Pre-treatment, dyeing, finishing of cotton and blended textiles
  • Eco testing and Eco-friendly chemical processing of textiles
  • Effluent characterization and treatment methods
  • Research on cotton by-Product and biomass Utilization
  • Nanomaterials and Plasma treatment for functional finishing of cotton textiles
  • Energy-efficient nanocellulose production from cotton linters and their applications

The division also undertakes testing & analysis of samples received from industry and breeding community. The testing laboratory of CBPD is accredited with ISO-17025: 2005 from NABL for analyzing blend compositions, fastness etc. The division is well equipped with modern instrumental facilities to carry out research and testing. It also organizes training programmes in the related areas for the benefit of stakeholders.

Mandate of the Division

  • To develop eco- friendly chemical processing & finishing technologies for the processing of cotton & its blended textiles.
  • To develop technologies for diversified utilization of cotton plant by-products, biomass, processing waste & other crop residues

The division has state of the art laboratory that include Chemical Processing Lab, Eco Testing lab, Microbiology & Biochemistry Lab, Nanotechnology Lab, Pulp & paper testing lab, Nanocellulose pilot plant and Plasma Lab

Chemical Processing Lab

Chemical processing lab is equipped with full range experimentalfabric processing machines like open bath dyeing machine, Laboratory garment dyeing machine, fabric rope dyeing machine, jigger etc. It has the facilities to test the quality of the textile materials like light fastness, washing fastness, perspiration fastness, blend analysis etc. The lab has Computer colour matching system with spectrophotometer, UPF analyzer to characterize the dyed and finished materials. The lab is equipped with rotary evaporator, spray drying machine for organic synthesis

Eco Testing Lab

The eco testing lab is equipped with various analytical equipment ranging from UV-Visible spectrometer, FT-IR, HPLC, GC-MS, GC with ECD, FID & FPD, AAS, HPTLC, DSC, TOC- TN analyser, TDS, Dissolved oxygen meter etc to test the harmful substances present in the fabric and effluent

Microbiology& Biochemistry Lab

The Microbiology and Biochemistry lab is unique and mostly deals with the research on byproduct utilization of cotton like cotton seed, meal, etc. The lab is equipped with basic microbiological equipment like laminar chamber, freezer, auto clave, fume hood, centrifuge.

Nanotechnology Lab

This division has State-of-the-Art Nanotechnology facility to carry out research in the field of synthesis, characterization and application of nanomaterials in textiles and composites. In addition, a full-fledged setup is established for electrospinning of biopolymers for production of nanofibres.

Pulp & Paper Testing Lab

Complete lab scale facilities for making pulp and paper from cotton linters/ cotton stalks and other agro residues exist in the division. Similarly facilities for making particle board from cotton stalks and other agro-residues are also available.

Nanocellulose Pilot Plant

Based on the technology developed for energy-efficient production of nanocellulose from cotton linters, a nanocellulose pilot plant is established with a production capacity of 10 kg per day. This pilot plant caters to the need of various entrepreneurs and industrialists for scaling up trails and technology validation in addition to routine use in research and development.

Plasma Lab

The lab is equipped with plasma generation and characterization equipments such as atmospheric plasma chamber, GC-MS and Optical Emission Spectrometer (OES).
