ICAR-CIRCOT Regional Unit, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, having completed 83 years of existence, is one of the oldest Regional Units of ICAR-CIRCOT. The Unit was originally established at Cotton Breeding Station, TNAU, Coimbatore and in the year 2010; the Unit was shifted to ICAR-CICR Regional Station premises at Coimbatore.
ICAR-CIRCOT Regional Unit, Coimbatore has been supporting cotton breeding programs under the All India Coordinated Cotton Improvement Project (AICCIP) of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). AICCIP undertake research programs on various aspects of crop improvement including fibre quality, in order to sustain and enhance the cotton production in the country. The ICAR-CIRCOT, Regional Unit, Coimbatore provides basic research support and also takes part in some of the strategic research on fibre quality improvement by evaluating the fibre quality parameters of cotton cultures under trial in close associations with Breeders.
The Centre is equipped with state of the art High Volume Instrument (HVI) and Advanced Fibre Information system (AFIS) for fibre quality analysis. The facilities available in the Unit have also been utilized by the spinning mills located in this region for optimization of process parameters for producing quality yarn from Indian cotton. This center act as a window for transforming the technologies developed at CIRCOT and has been involved in sustained extension activities in around Coimbatore.
