ICAR-Central Institute of Research on Cotton Technology, Mumbai organized a five-day training programme on “Quality Evaluation of Cotton” during December 12-16, 2022. During the inaugural session, Dr. S. K. Shukla, Director, ICAR-CIRCOT welcomed the trainees and exhorted them to be part of the much important training in cotton grading, classing and evaluation. He invited the trainees to gain as much as possible during these 5 days and utilise the same for the benefit of their organisation.

This self-financed training programme was attended by twelve participants, out of which two were female participants. Six were from Cotton Corporation of India Ltd. (Mumbai), while four were from ginning and cotton trading. In addition to Maharashtra, trainees from Gujrat, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Rajasthan, Karnataka underwent training. It covered skill development in cotton grading, quality evaluation & marketing; hands-on experience on qualitative grading with hands and eyes as well as instrumental methods; effect of ginning and spinning on fibre and yarn quality and economics of cotton processing. In total 16 lectures and 9 hands-on / demonstrations classes were conducted.

At the valedictory function, the trainees have given positive feedback and emphasised the need for incorporating the training on commodity trading especially hedging and futures. Dr. S. K. Shukla (Director), Dr. D. M. Kadam (i/c Head, TTD), Dr. N. Shanmugam (i/c Head, MPD) and Dr. A. S. M. Raja (i/c Head, QEID) interacted with the trainees & distributed the certificates. Dr. P. S. Deshmukh, Principal Scientist and Training Coordinator, thanked all the faculties and technical officers for their dedication in the success of the training programme.
