Conductive Yarn for Heat Generating Smart Textile Products

Smart Textile Products

Description:

Smart textiles are emerging area for new entrepreneurs to start their business. The protective clothing for low temperature lifestyle requires active heat generating garments and clothing. ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology (ICAR-CIRCOT), has developed cotton based heat generating textiles which are flexible, light weight, safe and have better comfort properties. The cotton-based electrically conductive yarns were developed which can be stitched over any fabric. These specially designed yarns were optimised for heat generation of different range of temperatures at different voltage levels. These specially designed yarns can be used in heat generating smart textile products such as automobile seat covers, thermal jackets, heating gloves, warm mouse pads and heating pads etc.

Salient features

  • Cotton-based electrically conductive yarns were developed which can be stitched over any fabric
  • Maximum heat generation of 50°C can be achieved within 15 seconds by using 5 to 12 volt DC power supply/ any rechargeable power bank.
  • Safety concerns are addressed by giving water repellent and flame retardant treatments to textiles to avoid water permeability and short circuit fire

Stakeholders :

Manufacturers of heat generating smart textile products like heating gloves, thermal garments, warming mouse pads, shoe pads, automobile seat covers, thermal home furnishing mats etc.

Benefit to Stakeholders :

  • Heat generating textiles are flexible, light weight, safe and have better comfort properties
  • Protects the end users from the cold environment, as the user can get active heat from the product
  • Useful for end users working in hilly areas, mountain climbers, bike riders, officials working in centralised air condition systems and people living in cold weather conditions

Cost : The manufacturing cost of conductive yarn is approximately Rs.20000/Kg. The benefit cost ratio may be 1:5.

Status of commercialisation :

The technology has been licenced to M/s. Apricitas Technologies Private Limited, Pune, Maharashtra for commercial scale production and marketing.
