Celebration of World Intellectual Property Day 2026
In compliance with the directions of ICAR-IP&TM Unit, New Delhi, ICAR–Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology (ICAR-CIRCOT), Mumbai, organized a programme on the occasion of World Intellectual Property Day 2026 on 29th April 2026.
The programme was conducted under the global theme “IP & Sports: Ready, Set, Innovate”, highlighting the critical role of intellectual property in the sports sector. IP rights such as patents, trademarks, and copyrights play a vital role in protecting innovations in sports equipment, apparel, performance technologies, and digital broadcasting.
The event was held in hybrid mode at the Video Conference Hall, ICAR-CIRCOT, Mumbai, with participation from scientists, technical staff, administrative staff, and other start-ups and stakeholders.

The programme commenced with Vande Mataram and the ICAR Song, followed by a welcome address by Dr. A. K. Bharimalla, Principal Scientist, who highlighted the importance of intellectual property in research, innovation, and agribusiness development. The opening remarks were delivered by Dr. S. K. Shukla, Director, ICAR-CIRCOT, who highlighted that the sports industry generates significant economic value and cash flow through branding, licensing, sponsorships, and media rights, where IP serves as a key driver for revenue generation and commercialization.

An expert lecture was delivered by Mr. Satish Kumar, Assistant Director, Ministry of MSME, on IP Awareness and Support Schemes for Researchers, MSMEs, and Startups, providing insights into various government initiatives and support mechanisms.
Another expert session by Mr. Vedant Pujari, Founder Partner, Accures IP Care LLP, focused on Strategic IP Management for Researchers, Innovators, and Startups and Opportunities in Emerging Technologies in Sports. The session highlighted practical strategies for IP protection and commercialization.

Both sessions were followed by interactive discussions and Q&A sessions, encouraging active participation and knowledge exchange among scientists and start-ups.
The programme concluded with closing remarks by the Chair and a vote of thanks. More than 100+ participants attended the programme.
The event was successfully conducted and effectively achieved its objective of enhancing awareness on intellectual property rights and their role and importance in sports, innovation, and technology development.
