Centenary Foundation Day celebrated by ICAR-CIRCOT on December 3, 2023.

The ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology, Mumbai celebrated its 100th Foundation Day on December 3, 2023 combined with Agricultural Education Day. This meeting was held on a hybrid mode.

Delivering his inaugural address online, the Chief Guest, Dr. S. N. Jha, DDG (Engg), ICAR, New Delhi appreciated the Institute’s sustained efforts in overall achievements and the milestones achieved for the past 99 years for the benefits of cotton community. Dr. Jha also insisted that the entire fraternity of ICAR-CIRCOT need to orient themselves to meet the ever-increasing challenges for the cotton in the modern world, including climate change, carbon emissions and water scarcity. In the area of farm mechanization, he stressed to have a collaborative approach to develop sophisticated tools, utilising the benefits of AI, ML and sensor technology for cotton picking / harvesting.

The Special Guest, Dr. T. R. Sharma, DDG (Crop Science), ICAR, New Delhi praised the contributions of both ICAR-CIRCOT and ICAR-CICR in the field of cotton technology, emphasizing ongoing technological advancements like robotic cotton pickers and the formulation of defoliants. He urged for increased efforts in mechanical harvesting, utilizing cotton stalks for value-added products, and enhancing soil health, while advocating for improved cotton value chain through stakeholder participation.

Dr. KRK Iyer, Former Director of ICAR-CIRCOT, delivered an invited talk on ‘Journery of ICAR-CIRCOT 100 years’ and elaborated the step-by-step transformation of the Institute from its very humble beginning as cotton testing lab in the year 1924 to the current status of world class research organization. He lauded the institute’s dedication in serving the nation for 99 years in cotton research and development. He highlighted the pivotal role in developing widely adopted fiber testing methods by ICAR-CIRCOT and its role in setting ISO / BIS standards for textile testing. He urged all the employees to take pledge towards advancing the Institute’s research momentum for a promising future.

Dr. S. K. Shukla, Director highlighted the year-long activities of the Institute, showcasing developed technologies, externally funded projects, signed MoUs, publications, and infrastructure development. He also highlighted the revenue generated by the institute from activities like trainings, skill development programmes and testing of samples. He highlighted the future research thrust areas like traceability, robotic harvester and cotton testing machine. He congratulated everyone on this 100th foundation day.

Dr. Narsaiah, ADG (PE), ICAR, New Delhi complimented ICAR-CIRCOT for the excellence in developing novel technologies and also revenue generation.  He stressed on development of high value products from cotton for sustainability. He also highlighted the need for new innovations in ginning, trash removal and urged to work on automated sensor-based technologies.

Dr. Y. G. Prasad, Director, ICAR-CICR, Nagpur stressed the need for a paradigm shift in cotton technology, advocating collaboration among institutes for sustainability and emphasized mechanization and converting cotton stalks into briquettes to tackle issues like pink bollworm.

Dr. C. D. Mayee, Former ASRB Chairman congratulated the Institute on the occasion of 100th Foundation Day and stressed upon the use of AI based technologies for trash removal to improve the value of India cotton in the World market.

Shri. Suresh Kotak, Chairman, Kotak Group of Companies & Chairman of Textile Advisory Group (TAG) congratulated the present and past employees of the Institute on the occasion of 100th Foundation Day and wished the Institute to lead the  entire World in the cotton research. 

Former Directors of the Institute, Dr. S. Sreenivasan and Dr. A.J. Shaikh applauded the entire fraternity of ICAR-CIRCOT on the Centenary Foundation Day and urged the present employees of the Institute to strive for excellence in research and development.

Best employee awards were handed over to twelve staff of the Institute for their consistent performance and dedication to their job. Two special awards were given for the exceptional contribution of employees in Swachh Bharat Mission.

On this auspicious occasion, two books, ‘Amber 2022’ and ‘ICAR-CIRCOT Revised Test Fee Schedule 2023’ were released at the hands of the dignitaries.

Dr. Venkatesh Sundaram, S/o. Dr. V. Sundaram, Former Director; Mrs. NB Patil, W/o. Dr. NB Patil, Former Director; Shri. H. R. Laxmi Venkatesh, former Technical Officer; Smt. Sujata Koshy, SAO; and, Shri. Bharat Pawar, CTO were felicitated during this auspicious occasion.

The dignitaries of the programme visited various advanced research facilities of the Institute. This meeting was followed by a cultural programme in the afternoon. To commemorate the 100th Foundation Day, centenary year shield was given to all the present and past employees of the Institute.
